  1. It is important for people to be able to read maps for multiple reasons. 1) if they get lost anywhere in the world, and need to find somewhere where they can get help they need to be able to read a map. 2) a map can give you direction in unknown areas. 3) Maps make everything easier to find e.g. the location, where places and countries are located. 4) maps are very reliable unlike "tom toms" and "SatNavs"
Maps are used to help you navigate from one place to another. People who would use maps regularly are people who work for tourist companies, people who like to explore the world (e.g. going on a gap year), Pilots, geologists, travel agent and a taxi/car/truck driver. - Zoe Gledhill 9C

  2. its important for people to be able to read maps so that they can go to places they have never been and so they don't know how to get there. Maps are used to show how to get to places and where they are located, everyone uses them at one point but travellers would use them regularly

  3. It is important for people to be able to read maps because despite modern day technology, this technology can still fail and it is important that people can read maps. As well as that if you go hiking off trail or even on trail it is important that you can read a map so that you don't get lost.
Maps are used for finding a way from one location to another and also being able to pinpoint the location of a destination
The people that might use maps are hikers and orienteers, as well as that people in cars might use maps to find their way to destination. also commuters use maps everyday when they are on the bus or train or walking to work.

  4. I think people should be able to read maps so they don't have to rely on sat-navs, what happens if it runs out of batteries then you wont get lost if you can read a map.

  5. It is important for people to be able to read maps as maps are a very useful way of getting around. If you are not able to read maps then it is very easy to get lost as many mountain rescues are due to bad navigation. Many jobs involve map reading like pilots, taxi drivers who use them to navigate people around areas captains of ships, travel agents and geologists. Maps give you a very good generalisation of the area. Maps are used for finding out how to get somewhere, to look for a particular country and to show you where things like train stations and post offices are.

  7. It is important for people to be able to read maps because we can't always rely on apps and sat navs to give us directions as they might not always be available when we need them. Maps can be used in lots of different ways such as Navigation and Planning. For planning you need to check a map to make sure you take the shortest easiest route and for navigation we need maps so we can work out where we are. Maps are also used in weather forecasting on tv to show the areas the weather will affect and to route traffic. Navigators, drivers and orienteers are all examples of people who would use maps regularly.

it might be important to read maps in case you find yourself without any technology but most of the time a sat nav or phone is more reliable and easier to use.

A map is a diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc. and we need them to find our way around places because we cant always rely on technology.

Even though we often use our phones or other electronic devices there may not always be wi-fi or service in the area you are in. Maps are always used on tv especially in the news when it comes to the weather forecast. People who drive often or go climbing and walks find maps extremely useful.

  15. If everyone who went out into the hills knew how to navigate well the job of the Mountain Rescue teams would be considerably easier. Bad navigation can lead to groups becoming lost and disorientated, getting onto steep, dangerous ground and being out much longer than planned. So if you know how to read map you wouldn't be in this type of predicament

  20. It is important to be able to read maps, because without maps, where would we know where to be? If you were lost, whether it’s in the country side or in the city, you still need maps. Maps are everywhere, on phones, on posters, everywhere! They tell you exactly where you need to go, and the distance you will travel. It is helpful for foreign people too, as they wouldn't know the area a map would be helpful for them to get around! If people can’t read maps, nobody would be able to get around without knowing the area. We all go on holidays to unknown locations, and need to be able to read maps to get around to these places. Different people who would need maps could be delivery people, as they have to travel all over the place delivering goods to different places. Taxi drivers would also use maps, as they too travel all over the place. Hikers and explorers use maps, as they wouldn't have the luxury of a sat-nav, so would need a map to plan their routes out!

  29. It is really important to be able to read maps as they are needed for crucial things, like if you're lost in the middle of nowhere, i highly doubt you will be able to get a signal for the internet, so you would have to rely on your map-reading skills to find your way to the nearest landmark. People need maps in their jobs, for example, pilots, weather forecasters, geography and history teaches and orienteers but to name a few.

  30. It is important for people to be able to read maps because if you are lost in a place you don't know, a map can help you find where you are and to get you to the place you need to go. Another reason people need to know how to read maps is because the place they are most likely to need to use them there is no wifi so they won't be able to go onto a online map to help them. This means they would be lost and not know where to go.
Maps are used to help you find your way in an unknown place to somewhere else. The people who might use them regularly are explorers who are discovering a new place; hikers who are going across mountains; cross country and off piste skiers so they know where it is safe for them to ski; and geologists who are trying to find out new rock formations.

  31. 1) maps are very useful. today we rely to heavily on technology. if you get lost in the woods or in an area with no signal the technology fails you. a map however does not require anything. so they are all ways reliable no matter where you are.
    2) maps are used to navigate people to different places. they are also used to find places. they are used by the army and scouts.this is because maps are all ways reliable as technology isn't as reliable and can get it wrong. also a lot of people who live in areas with non reception will use them to navigate themselves.

  33. It's important for people to be able to red maps because if they're lost or don't know their way around the place they can look at the map for directions and find their way. Maps are used for directions and being able locate areas and show key symbols for places. The types of people who normally use maps are explorers who enjoy travelling the world and visiting new destinations and cartographers who take the information from explorers to expand the information on a map.

It is important for people to be able to read maps as if you were lost, for example, on holiday in a foreign country, you would need map reading skills to find your way back to your hotel or house. Maps are also useful if you need to plan a route out- they show large areas of land and allow you to look at lots at once, as opposed to a phone or sat nav, where only a small section of map is visible at one time. It is also important not to rely on mobile phone GPS as it may be that there is slow or no connection in an emergency.

  55. I believe that reading maps ISN'T important now we have google maps. Technology is so much better and faster than reading maps, and it is MORE accurate than OS maps (they use their data (I think, they have as much data at least because they have elevation data and the like) and also use their own, like street view). For example, I need to find our school. I can search it on google maps and be there in 5-20 seconds. On an OS map, I have to go to the index, find the referance number, find the referance points and I am there in a minute(?) Now imagine how long it takes to get all the data google gets with directions on an OS map. There are no problems with google maps, unless you are going to go to a jungle, where there is no power, and you cannot borrow anyone elses phone. Google maps can be downloaded to use offline, and your phone is unlikely to run out of power in a bad situation, and even then it is not the end of the world. Cars have places to charge phones, people can tell you simple directions. This isn’t a strong enough point to say it is important to read maps.

Maps enable people to see where locationas are on a 2d scale and even go into the slightest details such as if a forest is deciduous, coniferous or mixed. Tourists will me most likely to be in need of a map as they will go exploring the local area or even somewhere a bit far off. With a map they can see where they need to go and statistics also have shown that 70% of people use maps when travelling abroad if they do not speak the language or dont know where they are going. Maps are really useful and beneficial to everyone! :D
